Evaluation & Diagnosis

When You Feel Lost, The Right Support Can Turn Confusion into Clarity.

When symptoms feel confusing, unpredictable, or overwhelming, it can start to feel like you are just getting through the day instead of actually living it. A careful, supportive evaluation can help bring clarity to what is going on and what might help.

At Fresh Path Integrative Psychiatry, we offer thoughtful, integrative evaluations and medication management combined with holistic support. Our goal is to help you understand what you are experiencing so you can feel more steady, clear, and supported in your care.

What Is a Mental Health Evaluation and Who Needs One?

A mental health evaluation is a structured conversation and assessment designed to understand what you are experiencing and why. It brings together your symptoms, history, and current life circumstances into a clearer picture than any single symptom can offer on its own.

You may benefit from an evaluation if your symptoms don't make sense to you, if your current treatment isn't working for all of your symptoms, if you feel unheard in conventional care, if you noticed a shift in yourself after a big transition, if you feel like you don't fully understand yourself and your patterns, or if you feel like your health is out of your control. None of these mean something is wrong with you. They usually mean it's time for a closer look.

You are not broken. You are not hopeless. You deserve clarity.

What Happens During a Psychiatric Evaluation?

At Fresh Path Integrative Psychiatry, we practice integrative psychiatry, which means we look at your mental health through multiple lenses rather than focusing only on symptoms in isolation.

Your evaluation may include:

A comprehensive psychiatric assessment

Review of relevant lab work and hormone levels when appropriate

Collaboration with your primary care provider or other clinicians

Consideration of genetic testing when indicated

Exploration of sleep, stress, trauma history, nutrition, and nervous system health

Each piece is gathered to build a fuller understanding of what is driving your symptoms, not just to check a box.

How Long Does a Mental Health Evaluation Take?

A thorough evaluation takes the time it needs to actually understand you, rather than rushing toward a label. Because we look at multiple layers of your health, including labs, history, and lifestyle factors, your evaluation may unfold over more than one visit as pieces of information come together.

This pacing is intentional. A rushed evaluation can miss what matters most, while a careful one gives you and your provider the full picture needed to build a plan that actually fits.

What Should You Bring to Your First Psychiatric Appointment?

Coming prepared can help your provider get a clearer picture from the start. It's helpful to bring a list of current medications and supplements, any relevant prior lab work or records, and notes on symptoms you've noticed, including when they started and what makes them better or worse.

Beyond paperwork, the most useful thing you can bring is your honest experience. You don't need to have the right words for everything you're feeling. Part of the evaluation process is helping you find language for what has been hard to explain.

How Is a Mental Health Evaluation Different From Therapy?

A mental health evaluation is focused on assessment. It's about understanding what is happening, why it might be happening, and what treatment approaches make sense, including whether medication, lab work, or other medical considerations are involved. Therapy, by contrast, is an ongoing process focused on working through those issues over time, typically through talk-based or skills-based approaches.

Many people benefit from both. An evaluation often serves as the starting point that shapes what therapy, medication management, or other support should look like moving forward.

What Conditions Can a Psychiatric Evaluation Diagnose?

A psychiatric evaluation can help identify a wide range of conditions, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma-related symptoms, mood disorders, and hormone-related mental health changes, among others. Because we take a whole-person approach, we also consider whether symptoms may stem from factors like sleep disruption, nutrition, or an underlying medical issue rather than a standalone psychiatric diagnosis.

We use all available treatment modalities to bring you into balance, including:

  • Pharmacological medications

  • Western herbal formulations and supplements

  • Diet and lifestyle interventions

  • Targeted psychotherapy approaches

There is no hierarchy of medicine here. We build a personalized plan that respects your body, your history, and your preferences.

What Happens After Your Evaluation Is Complete?

Once your evaluation is complete, we build a collaborative care plan together, one that may include your therapists, medical providers, and other specialists so every part of your care is working toward the same goals: clarity, stability, and resilience.

Your experiences do not happen in isolation. Identity, culture, trauma history, and ongoing stress all play a role in how symptoms show up and how they are understood. Fresh Path provides inclusive, trauma-informed care for adults of all genders, sexual orientations, racial and cultural identities, and we are queer-affirming and neurodiversity-affirming throughout every stage of your care.

Your symptoms matter. Your experience matters. Your voice matters.

If you're ready to take that first step, you can start your evaluation and diagnosis with Fresh Path Integrative Psychiatry.
